An dieser Weiterentwicklung des GSM-Mobilfunks wollen sich Alcatel, Italtel, Nortel, Siemens, Bosch und Motorola beteiligen. UMTS wird als die dritte Mobilfunkgeneration bezeichnet und kann bis zu 2 MBit/s übertragen.
